The Monsignor Thomas P. Hadden African American Reparative Scholarship
January 2, 2025
Thomas P. Hadden was ordained a Catholic priest on December 20, 1958, after having been the first African American to study at the North American College in Rome. He was one of the first Black pastors of a predominantly White parish in the South. Monsignor Hadden served in Newton Grove, Raleigh, and Wilmington, North Carolina. In the latter city, he helped organize St. Mary’s Social Ministries, an outreach program that offered emergency food, clothing, and furniture to the needy. His ministry led to the development of Hadden Hall, a low income housing residence for seniors. Monsignor Hadden’s willingness to welcome everyone led to the creation of a diverse racial, ethnic, and socio-economic community at St. Mary’s.
