Background/Purpose
Spiritual masters such as Joan Chittister, Henri Nouwen, and several others, have written about the last third of life, (60+), as being a time for the formation of the soul. It is a season that has unique challenges, struggles, surprises, pain, and joys, that are indigenous to the aging process. Chittister writes: “The spiritual task of later life is giving oneself wholly to the birthing of the person within, embracing the blessing, and overcoming the burdens. It is a time of profound change as we find new meaning and purpose, in moving from doing to being.” It is a time for living in what Teihard de Chardin called, “the power of slowing.” Aging well lies in the awareness that there is a purpose to aging; old age enlightens.
The task in this season of life is about becoming new again, it is a re-birthing time of fullness of life and ripening. In order to age well, we must have the help and support of a safe and healing spiritual community.
