Mission Statement/Purpose
The Furniture Project is an ecumenical ministry of 18 faith communities (16 churches and 2 synagogues) plus 3 businesses under the umbrella of St. Thomas More. We collect gently used furniture, provide a tax donation form, and deliver to families that are recommended to us by advocates of service organizations that help the homeless and marginalized.
Major Accomplishments
Worked with Red Cross, Catholic Charities, and Department of Social Services to help flood victims. Provided beds for 21 children and their families in January alone. Those coming out of shelters, marginalized workers at UNC and the hospitals, domestic violence victims, children in our local schools, and others who cannot afford to adequately furnish their apartments are recommended to us for help. Many Christian immigrants fleeing their homelands for the safety of their families have arrived here with nothing but their suitcases.
Major Activity
This is an all volunteer effort. We are in need of those with pick-up trucks that can help occasionally or regularly with either picking up donations or delivering to a needy family. We are also in need of individuals who can help lift furniture. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have insurance. We have a fun group of volunteers and would love to expand our group, so if you have the time and want to see someone transformed before your eyes when the furniture is delivered, please join us. This is a life-changing ministry for both the recipient and the volunteer.
Meeting Frequency
There are no meetings. All scheduling and contact is done by email and/or phone. We do have get together parties once or twice a year.
Meeting Venue
We meet at the storage area when delivering furniture or at the home of the donor.
Estimated Time Commitment for Volunteers
It can vary according to individual’s time…from as little as 2 hours per month.
Special Skills
No special skills, just a desire to help the most needy in our community.
